It’s not hard to see why online therapy is growing in popularity. Tech is a part of modern life, especially for millennials, the biggest group of users.
That said, the concept of distance therapy is nothing new. Sigmund Freud would often send letters to people in his care. Through these letters, he was able to provide support and receive feedback from his clients. In the 1960’s therapy by telephone became (and still is) extremely popular often serving as a temporary substitute for face-to-face sessions, for crisis intervention between sessions, and to maintain a therapeutic relationship if someone moves away is away from home for lengths of time.
There are many advantages of online therapy one being the ‘disinhibition effect’ where people feel more comfortable opening up and discussing problems when they’re online.
People in rural or remote areas who may not have access to any form of therapy or alternative treatments because there are no clinics or health practices in their geographic area.
Remote therapy provides accessibility to individuals who are disabled or housebound. Mobility can be a big issue when it comes to accessing private therapies, especially when the therapist is based in a big city such as Central London.
And of course there’s really no limit to the issues that can be addressed with distance therapy:
- Food and eating issues
- Relationship issues
- Obsessions and compulsions
- Parenting issues
For my international and overseas clients, those unable to access my clinics in London and Tunbridge Wells and for clients who require more privacy and discretion than a clinic environment can offer, I am pleased to offer remote therapy sessions via Skype in the comfort of your home, office or place of your choice.
